When does my Claude usage limit reset?

The rest of this page explains each limit, what “reset” means, what happens when you hit one, and where the reset time shows up. Everything about Anthropic's rules comes from Anthropic's own help pages and docs, listed at the end.

The five-hour session limit

Anthropic's wording is short: “Your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours.” Settings → Usage shows how much of the current session you have used and how much time is left in it.

What Anthropic does not document is what starts the clock. Its help pages give no rule for that. The time left in Settings → Usage is the one figure you can rely on.

The session limit is shared. Claude on the web, on the desktop and on your phone, Claude Code in the terminal and Claude Code in an IDE all count against the same limits. In May 2026 Anthropic doubled Claude Code's five-hour limits for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, and dropped the peak-hours reduction for Claude Code on Pro and Max.

The weekly limit

Pro and Max also have a weekly limit that applies across all models. In Anthropic's words, it resets “at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account”. The day and time stay the same no matter when you start using Claude or when your plan began, and each cycle brings the full weekly allowance.

Your usage counts against both limits at the same time. That is why a heavy day can use up the weekly limit while the five-hour window still has room — or the other way round.

Limits for single models

Some limits cover one model only. Settings → Usage shows when the weekly limit resets for all models, and for Fable if your plan includes it. Claude Code's docs also list an Opus limit and a Sonnet limit, each with its own reset time.

The difference matters when you hit one. The session and weekly limits are shared across all models, so a different model does not help. A model limit covers only that model family, so in Claude Code /model and a model from another family keep you working.

Anthropic also keeps the right to limit usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or caps on models and features, at its own discretion.

How much you get

Anthropic does not publish a number of messages. It depends on the length of your messages and files, the length of the chat, the model, the effort level and the tools you use. What Anthropic does state: Max 5x gives five times the Pro plan's per-session allowance, Max 20x gives twenty times.

What “reset” means

At the reset time the used share of that window drops back to zero and the full allowance is there again. Nothing carries over.

Anthropic now and then gives eligible plans a limit reset as well. It sets either the session limit or the weekly limit back to full at once, when you choose. You use it with “Reset for free” under Settings → Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop — not in the mobile app or in Claude Code. You cannot undo it, it can expire, and your weekly limit still resets on its usual day and time.

What happens when you hit a limit

On claude.ai you first see “Approaching 5-hour limit”. At the limit a blocking message names the time you can go on. Claude Code warns earlier too, with a line such as “You've used 85% of your session limit”, and then blocks requests until the reset time it shows. Since version 2.1.234 it can wait in the open session and continue the task on its own after the reset; that is on by default.

Your choices at that point:

• Wait for the reset time in the message.
• Usage credits — Anthropic's newer name for what Claude Code used to call extra usage. On Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x you switch them on under Settings → Usage, pay in advance and set a monthly cap. Past the limit you pay standard API rates. The five-hour reset keeps its usual rhythm.
• A larger plan: Pro to Max 5x, or Max 5x to Max 20x.

Where to see the reset time

• claude.ai: Settings → Usage. “Current session” shows the used share and the time left; “Weekly limits” shows when each weekly limit resets.
• Claude Code: /usage shows your plan limits and when they reset (/cost and /stats open the same screen). One of Anthropic's help pages still points to /status, but the current docs describe /status as version, model, account and connection info. For a live view, a custom status line can read the five-hour and seven-day windows with their reset times.
• AI Cockpit: the Claude card reads the same windows after you sign in with Claude in the app. Each window shows its used share and its reset time on Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch — on the Mac as a line like “Resets in 2 hours · 15:40”. On the Mac the menu bar icon can show the time left until the window you pick resets. If the pace says the five-hour window will run full before it resets, the app can tell you: “At this pace, used up by … — reset only at …”. On iPhone you can switch on a notice for when a new five-hour window begins; it is off until you turn it on.

Short answers

Does the five-hour window start with my first message?

Anthropic's help pages do not say what starts the clock. They say only that the session limit resets every five hours, and Settings → Usage shows how much time is left. Go by that figure, not by a rule of thumb.

Does my weekly limit reset on the day I subscribed?

No. The weekly limit resets at a fixed day and time that Anthropic assigns to your account. It stays the same no matter when you start using Claude or when your subscription began.

Does switching models help when I hit the limit?

Not for the session or the weekly limit: both are shared across all models. It helps only with a model limit, such as the Opus or Sonnet limit in Claude Code. Then a model from another family keeps you working.

Do claude.ai and Claude Code have separate limits?

No. On Pro and Max, Claude on the web, desktop and mobile, Claude Code in the terminal and Claude Code in your IDE all draw on the same limits.
