Claude Pro vs Max: how much more usage do you get?

Last updated: 26 September 2026 · Deutsch

Max 5x gives five times the Pro plan’s usage per five-hour session, Max 20x gives twenty times. Anthropic names no number of messages for any plan.

All three plans share one set of limits across claude.ai, the desktop and mobile apps and Claude Code, and all three have a weekly limit on top. Whether you need Max shows in your own usage, not in a table.

Everything below about Anthropic’s rules comes from its own help pages and docs, listed at the end. This page leaves prices out: they differ by country and change, and the pricing page shows the current ones.

What Anthropic states

The factor is stated per five-hour session. For the weekly limit, Anthropic gives no separate figure. Nor does it name a number of messages. How far a session goes depends on the length of your messages and files, the length of the chat, the model, the effort level and the tools you use, such as web search or Research. Content that is still cached counts less than new content.

Anthropic also keeps the right to limit use in other ways, “such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage”, at its discretion. That holds for every plan.

Does Max give Claude Code its own limit?

No. Claude on the web, on the desktop and on your phone and Claude Code all count against the same limits. There is no separate pot for Claude Code.

So a long coding day in the terminal leaves less room for chat in the evening, and the other way round. If you weigh Pro against Max, count both.

Does Max have a weekly limit too?

Yes. Pro and Max both have a weekly limit that applies across all models. It resets at a fixed time each week that Anthropic assigns to your account.

The session limit resets every five hours. Your use counts against both windows at the same time, so either one can stop you — Max included.

When each window resets and what a reset does is covered in When does my Claude usage limit reset?

Limits per model

Some limits cover one model only. Claude Code reports an Opus limit and a Sonnet limit, each with its own reset time. If you hit one of those, /model and a model from another family keep you working. The session and weekly limits, by contrast, cover all models; a switch does not help there.

Fable models show the clearest gap between the plans:

There are smaller gaps too: Max lists priority access at high-traffic times and to new models and features.

Usage credits: the option between plans

Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x can all switch on usage credits under Settings → Usage. You pay in advance and can set a monthly cap, or none. Once your plan’s limit is used up, credits carry on at standard API rates, on claude.ai and in Claude Code. They do not change the five-hour rhythm; they only start once the included use is gone.

That makes credits the fit for a rare overrun, and a larger plan the fit for a steady one. How API rates add up is shown in AI API costs at a glance.

How to tell whether you need Max

Anthropic gives no rule for this. Your own figures are the best guide. Two places show them:

Claude Code also warns before a window runs out, with a line such as “You’ve used 85% of your session limit”.

Watch your own usage for a week or two, under Settings → Usage on claude.ai and with /usage in Claude Code. If you keep hitting the five-hour limit, Max gives you more room per session. If you hit it only now and then, usage credits may be enough.

Three more checks before you change plan:

In AI Cockpit

The Claude card sits in the Mac menu bar, in the app on iPhone and iPad, and on Apple Watch (via the iPhone app) with one window per page. You sign in with Claude once inside the app; there is no API key for this card.

A second Claude account gets its own card with its own label and windows.

What it does not do: show your usage-credit balance or spend, count messages or tokens, or tell you which plan to buy. It shows how full your windows run; the choice is yours.

How the card reads these figures and how the forecast works is set out in Monitoring Claude usage limits. Short answers to other questions are on the FAQ page.
