Subscription or API: what is cheaper for you?
A flat $20 plan or pay per token: one formula and three examples show where each wins, plus the limits and privacy settings that count beyond cost.
Two ways to pay for AI. A subscription gives you an app and a flat monthly fee. The API gives you raw access and bills every token you send and receive. Which one costs less depends on how much you use it. This article gives you a formula, three worked examples and the points that money does not capture.
Prices below were checked on 26 October 2026. They change often, so treat them as a snapshot. Current numbers live in the AI API prices and AI subscriptions tables, and you can run your own case in the cost calculator.
The formula
API cost per request:
cost = (input_tokens × input_price + output_tokens × output_price) / 1,000,000
Prices are quoted per million tokens (price per million tokens). Then:
monthly API cost = cost per request × requests per month
break-even requests = monthly fee / cost per request
Two traps raise the input side. In a chat, the app resends the whole history with each message, so input grows with every turn. Files and long documents add input too. Use the token estimator to size your text.
Prices used here
| Item | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 per month | learn.chatgpt.com/docs/pricing |
| Claude Pro | $20 per month, or $17 per month billed yearly ($200) | claude.com/pricing |
| Google AI Pro | CHF 17 per month on the Swiss page; Google lists $19.99 for the US | gemini.google/subscriptions |
| Mid model API (Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol) | $2 in / $10 out per million tokens | platform.claude.com, developers.openai.com |
| Small model API (Claude Haiku 5.5, GPT-6 Luna) | $0.10 in / $0.50 out per million tokens | same |
| Top model API (Claude Opus 5.5) | $4 in / $20 out per million tokens | platform.claude.com |
Checked 2026-10-26. Claude Haiku 5.5 is priced this low for prompts up to 100,000 tokens; longer prompts cost more. The higher plans (ChatGPT Pro from $100, Claude Max from $100) exist for heavy users.
Three examples
Same model, three usage levels. The mid model costs $2 in and $10 out per million tokens. One request is one prompt plus one answer.
| Light | Medium | Heavy | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Requests per day | 10 | 40 | 150 |
| Requests per month | 300 | 1,200 | 4,500 |
| Tokens per request | 1,500 in, 600 out | 4,000 in, 800 out | 12,000 in, 1,500 out |
| Cost per request (mid model) | $0.009 | $0.016 | $0.039 |
| API, mid model | $2.70 | $19.20 | $175.50 |
| API, small model | $0.14 | $0.96 | $8.78 |
| API, top model | $5.40 | $38.40 | $351.00 |
| Flat plan | $20 | $20 | $20 (or $100 plan) |
Worked step for Medium: (4,000 × $2 + 800 × $10) / 1,000,000 = $0.016. Times 1,200 requests = $19.20.
Reading the numbers
- Light use: the API wins by a wide margin. $2.70 against $20. A small model makes it almost free.
- Medium use: a tie on the mid model. The small model is far cheaper, the top model costs about twice the plan.
- Heavy use: the flat plan wins, if its limits allow your pace. Even a $100 plan costs less than $175.50 on the API.
The break-even point
Break-even is the monthly fee divided by the cost per request. At $20 and $0.016 per request that is 1,250 requests, about 42 a day. With the top model at $0.032 per request it falls to 625. With the small model at $0.0008 per request it climbs to 25,000, which most people never reach.
Two ways to push API cost down: prompt caching lowers the price of repeated input, and the Batch API is 50% cheaper at Anthropic for jobs that can wait (Anthropic API overview).
What money does not show
Limits. Plans do not sell a fixed number of messages. ChatGPT Plus shows estimates per five-hour window that vary by model. For one model it lists roughly 35 to 285 local messages. Claude plans use a rolling five-hour window and weekly caps, and Google AI Pro offers about four times the free Gemini app limits. The API has no such window; instead you meet a rate limit and your own usage limit.
Privacy settings. The apps and the API treat your data differently. OpenAI states that data sent to its API is not used to train its models unless you opt in. Anthropic says the same by default for its commercial products. In consumer apps, training depends on a setting you can change, such as ChatGPT's "Improve the model for everyone" or Claude's "Model Improvement". Read what not to paste before you pick either.
Convenience. A plan gives you an app with chat history, file upload, voice and often image tools, with no code. The API gives you a building block. You need a tool or script on top, and you must guard the key.
Predictability. A plan has a fixed bill. The API bill moves with use, so set a spending limit first (see how to create a key and set a limit).
Features. Some features exist only in the app, others only through the API. Check the plan page before you buy.
For teams
Team plans bill per seat. ChatGPT Business costs $20 per user per month billed yearly, or $25 billed monthly. Claude Team has a Standard seat at $20 per month billed yearly ($25 monthly) and a Premium seat at $100 ($125 monthly). Google lists its Gemini Enterprise Business edition from USD 21 per user per month (checked 2026-10-26). Seats pay off when many people use the tool every day. The API fits better when one script or app serves many people. Business plans also come with stronger data terms; see what not to paste.
A simple rule
- Write down a typical week of use: requests, rough length, model.
- Run the formula, or use the cost calculator.
- Under about half the plan price on the API? Use the API or a mix.
- Near the plan price or above it? Take the plan.
- Revisit every few months. Prices and models change.
Tip: Many people use both: a flat plan for daily chat, the API with a small model for scripts and batch jobs.
Warning: Heavy use on the API without a spending limit can cost more than you plan. Set a cap first.
Questions and answers
Is the API always cheaper than a subscription?
No. With light use it is much cheaper. With heavy use, such as long chats or large files all day, a flat plan can cost far less than the same traffic on the API.
Does a ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro plan include API credit?
No. Plans and API are billed separately. OpenAI's help page for ChatGPT Plus says API usage is billed on its own.
Where do I find current prices?
Use the AI API prices and AI subscriptions tables on this site, and the cost calculator. They show the date each price was checked.
Can I use both?
Yes. Many people keep one flat plan for daily chat and use the API for scripts, batch jobs and tools that need a key.
