Token estimator: roughly count tokens in your text
A free tool that estimates how many tokens a text holds. It is a rough guide, not an exact count.
Paste your text and the tool gives a rough token count. It runs in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
Runs only in your browser. Nothing is sent. Real counts depend on each model’s tokenizer.
What the tool does
It estimates. It does not run the tokenizer of any one model. It applies a simple rule of thumb to the length of your text.
The rule of thumb
For English text, OpenAI gives these guides in its help centre:
- 1 token is about 4 characters.
- 1 token is about three quarters of a word.
These are averages. Real counts differ with the text:
- German and other languages with long words usually need more tokens for the same meaning.
- Code splits in other ways. Symbols, spaces and names can each take tokens.
- Numbers and rare words often break into several small pieces.
Why it matters
Tokens set your bill and your limits. Providers charge per token, and every model has a context window that caps how much it can read at once.
For an exact count, use the usage figures your provider returns after a call, or the provider's own counting tool.
Next step
Turn tokens into money with the cost calculator and the API price table.
Questions and answers
How many tokens is a page of text?
A page of about 500 English words is roughly 650 to 700 tokens, using the rule of thumb that one token is about three quarters of a word. German and code give more.
Why is the count only an estimate?
Each model has its own tokenizer that splits text differently. The same text can give different counts on different models.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The estimator runs in your browser and your text stays on your device.
